Is My Fire Alarm System Sophisticated Enough?
Posted on: 28 June 2018
In 2015, there were 113,500 non-residential fires. While a small residential building might be able to get away with a simple fire alarm, large commercial buildings need a system that is much more sophisticated. You will need a fire alarm designer who is able to create an advanced system that will keep your building up to code. There are several features that an advanced fire alarm system needs.
Sophisticated Fire Alarm Panels
When you have a system with multiple fire alarms and detectors, you will need an effective fire alarm control panel. The most advanced panels come with two-way voice to allow for communication during fire emergencies.
Multiple Methods of Fire Detection
Old fire alarm systems would have false alarms because the detection method was not accurate enough. Also, older systems rely on smoke detection, but depending on the building design, the only sign of a fire may be a temperature spike. Therefore, you will need heat sensors.
Effective Notification Systems
Fire alarm systems should have multiple methods of alerting building occupants to a fire. In addition to the traditional audible alarm sound, the alarm should come with flashing lights to alert those who are hearing impaired. To ensure that everyone evacuates, make sure that the alarm system has speakers that are positioned so that everyone can hear it. Some fire alarm systems can also send text messages and email after detecting a fire.
Optional Features
Advanced alarm systems go beyond fire detection. Many systems can detect hazardous gases that may be possible in your building. Carbon monoxide detectors are common features, but there may be less common gases that may be a threat within your building.
You may need an emergency elevator recall system to prevent elevators from stopping at a floor that has a fire. Air duct systems can be designed to shut off air flow after sensors detect smoke to prevent smoke from flowing throughout the building. Also, your building can have emergency fire doors open automatically to release smoke. Effective smoke management is essential because smoke inhalation is a leading cause of fire-related death.
Long-Lasting Battery Back-Up
For your advanced fire alarm system to be effective, it must not fail. Fire alarms must rely on both the power grid and on batteries for when there is a power outage. The batteries must be made with lithium because these types will last much longer. But when you have the most advanced fire alarm system for your building, you will not only be up to code, but you will keep everyone safe.
