If you have found single-family homes that you have fallen in love with, you may be hesitant to go forward with the buying process because you want to learn more about the area surrounding it. If so, use the tips below to check out the neighborhood surrounding your desired house for sale.
Take Alternate Routes to the House
When you first visited the house and then toured it with your real estate agent, you may have taken the same route both times, either because it was conveniently located near a main highway or it was the way your GPS sent you. However, taking the same route only gives you one view of the area in which the house is located.
To get an overall picture of the neighborhood, pull up a map of the area to find different roads leading to the house. Or, simply drive around the neighborhood.
As you drive through the area, try to get a feel for the people living there, as well as the condition of other houses. Pay particular attention to the yards nearest to the house you are considering buying. If they appear to have a lot of junk or the houses look as though they are in disrepair, you may want to find out more about your potential neighbors.
Drive by the House at Different Times and Days
Not only should you take different routes toward the house, but you should also visit at various times of the days on different days of the week. When you toured the home, you may have seen it during a weekday when most people were at work.
If so, make it a point to drive by one day around the time when people get off from work. Not only does this allow you to see the neighborhood's people, but it can also give you an idea of the parking situation on the road in front of the house.
You should also try to schedule a driveby during a weekend night to see if there seem to be any illegal activities o seedy people hanging around. If you feel unsafe just driving through the neighborhood at this time, you will probably not feel safe living there.
Using the above tips to check out the neighborhood surrounding a home in which you are interested in buying can help give you an overall view of the location.
