Mistakes To Avoid When Dealing With Cockroaches In Your House

Posted on: 23 October 2018

If you have spotted a few cockroaches in your kitchen, you may decide that you can try to get rid of them yourself. However, as you try to deal with the cockroaches in your home, make sure you do not make the following mistakes.

Thinking Roaches Only Live in Your Kitchen

Since you first saw the roaches in your kitchen, you may think that they will stay in that room. After all, the kitchen provides them with food, water, and even plenty of places to hide.

However, roaches will spread throughout your home, especially as their population grows. If you have piles of clutter that are rarely disturbed in your other rooms, they will see these as desirable locations to nest and hide.

Also, if you eat in any of your other rooms, any crumbs that fall to the floor will attract them. And since your bathrooms have water, these rooms are also prime locations.

When you see roaches in your kitchen, start cleaning up the rest of your house along with that primary location. Get rid of the piles of clutter, and set up a regular cleaning routine where you wipe table surfaces and vacuum crumbs off of the floor.

Putting Down Poison or Traps

If you have decided to try to take care of your roach problem by yourself, you may think that simply putting down poisons or laying roach traps in your kitchen will get rid of them. While these methods may cut back on some of the population, they will not get rid of all of the roaches in your home.

Roaches tend to be skittish insects, which is why you see them scurry away so quickly whenever you walk into the room. The more timid roaches will not enter the traps. Instead, they will play it safe and go for food they can readily find without crawling into unknown spaces.

As far as most poisons, they often work very quickly, leaving dead roaches lay around the areas in which they are laid. However, since their fellow insects will see their dead bodies, the ones that remain alive will avoid these areas and never even walk in the poison.

Along with the mistakes above, you should also avoid waiting too long before calling in a professional to help you get rid of the cockroaches. Contact a pest control service so that they can kill the roaches before they have a chance to completely take over your house.
