Beyond Price — 5 Ways To Spot A True Luxury Home

Posted on: 6 January 2020

As you shop for a new home, you will often see the designation, 'luxury' added to some listings. While anyone can use such terminology, you can easily distinguish a true luxury home from any that are simply trying to beef up their potential price point. How can you distinguish a real luxury home? Here are five things that are better indicators than the price tag.

1. Location. A home could be categorized as luxury if it is in a prime spot. This could include a luxury neighborhood, hot downtown area, waterfront community, or grand viewpoint. While you can change many things about a house, remember that you can't change its location. So paying a premium for the right spot could be worth your extra money.

2. Size. While not all luxury houses are large, it is a common element. This is particularly true in an urban location where size is a luxury. Certainly, the ability to have more rooms, space to entertain, large yards, or places for your family to spread out could make size a key factor in your search. Keep in mind, though, that luxury size is relative to each area.

3. Quality. Luxury homes should be made with quality materials. These homes go above and beyond 'builders grade' materials and should be filled with things that will stand the test of time — from the home's internal structure to the quality of its appliances. High quality gives you the luxury of freedom from worry.

4. Amenities. If you are paying for a more luxurious home environment, you should expect to see high-end amenities. Common luxury items to look for include so-called chef's kitchens, a spa-like bathroom experience, extensive outdoor entertainment or cooking areas, built-in technology, and smart systems.

5. History. Even an older or more modest home could be considered a luxury experience if its has a compelling story. Historical homes that have been renovated but still carry their old-school charm are often an emotional as well as physical luxury. How you define a 'good story' varies, but it might include a long family history, a famous architect, historical prior owners, or an important role in local history. Historical value is an element missing in most homes, so it may be worth an extra investment to you.

Clearly, a true luxury residence is seen by what it brings to the table. To match the right home to your own needs and interests, meet with a real estate agent who specializes in luxury residential homes
