5 Upgrades That Are Worth It When Building A New Construction Home

Posted on: 14 January 2021

When building a new construction home, you need to mind your budget. You need to make sure that you stay within your budget while getting a custom home that meets your needs. You will have to decide what upgrades are worth spending money on and what upgrades are not worth it.

Upgrade #1: Carpet Padding

If you are using carpet in any portion of your home, it is worth it to pay for higher-quality carpet padding. Higher quality padding really doesn't cost that much more than regular padding; however, it will make your carpet feel cushier and more comfortable under your feet. Better carpet padding can make your carpet feel nicer, even if you stick with a more budget carpet option.

Upgrade #2: Larger Garage

As you build your home, don't skimp on your garage space. If you can afford to have a bigger garage, go for it. Make sure your garage is big enough so that it can actually fit two vehicles comfortably, so the car doors can be open and there will still be space to move around. Many "two-car" garages are such a tight squeeze that you would never want to park more than one vehicle inside of them.

Add extra space to your garage so that you can store things such as your lawnmower, garden supplies, and other outdoor equipment. Give yourself some dedicated storage space and enough functional space to use as well.

Upgrade #3: Energy Saving Features

Next, energy-saving features are worth it, as they will save you money as you actually live in your home. Spring for the most energy-efficient windows, heating and cooling system, insulation, and appliances you can afford. The more energy-efficient your home is, the less money you will have to spend on heating and cooling costs, which will make the act of living in your home more affordable and will help your home naturally be more comfortable as well.

Upgrade #4: Additional Lighting

It is so much easier to wire in more lighting when you are having your home built. Adding new lighting later can be costly, awkward, and messy. When you're building, add all the lighting you want. You can always turn off the lights that you don't want to use. Add layers of light to each room so you have both functional and ambient lighting in each room in your home.

Upgrade #5: Taller Basement

If you are building a basement for your home, add a little extra height to your basement. If you make your basement the minimum height required, the space will feel cramped, and you probably will not get that much usage out of it. Adding an extra one to three feet will add a few thousand dollars onto your budget but will turn the basement into a space that is actually usable and valuable, instead of just a short, dark storage area.

When it comes to knowing what to spend money on when building a new construction home, splurge on high-quality carpet padding, a bigger garage, energy-saving features, additional lighting, and a tall, functional basement. Splurge on items that will increase your home's value and function and that will be difficult to add later.
