Tips for Finding an Apartment That Works for Your Family

Posted on: 14 June 2021

When envisioning a perfect family, the setting often includes a single-family home complete with a white picket fence on a quiet suburban street. In reality, however, many families choose to live in an apartment setting to be closer to work, family, or for many other reasons.

While living in an apartment can include many benefits, families who are looking for a first apartment can use the following information to improve their search and help them find the space that will best fit their housing needs.

Look for a suitable kitchen

Whether living in a single-family home or an apartment, families tend to use their kitchens more than any other space. So it makes sense to focus your attention on apartments where the kitchen spaces are large, even if it means dealing with smaller bedrooms or other less used areas. To get even more use-value from an apartment kitchen, families may want to look for features like:

  • a larger eat-in design, instead of a smaller kitchen and separate dining space
  • an island or counter spaces large enough for more than one cook to work
  • sufficient pantry or cabinet space for family-size grocery storage

Apartment kitchens will also be most suitable for family-sized meal preparation and dining needs if they are outfitted with a dishwasher and a full-sized kitchen stove and refrigerator.

Consider privacy needs

Families who move from a single-family home to an apartment often struggle with a lack of privacy. When looking at apartments, families with children may find that selecting a split-bedroom floor plan where the main living spaces separate the parent's bedroom from those used by their children provides a more private feel. If the apartment offers a balcony space, it can also be used as a private retreat.

Insist on security

Another important factor for finding an apartment capable of becoming a comfortable home for your family is the level of security it offers. Secure access features, including good lighting, security cameras at entry and exit points, and keyed or keypad entry should be at the top of the list of search criteria.

Families with young children may also want to give priority to apartment complexes that offer on-site playgrounds or other family-friendly recreational areas. Moving to a more urban area is a big adjustment for families who have previously lived in single-family homes. To ensure that your family's apartment life is a comfortable, content one, take time to discuss your questions and concerns with a reputable real estate agent who offers experience with apartment leases.
