What You Should Look For In A Senior Apartment Complex

Posted on: 16 November 2022

You may have decided it's time to move into a senior apartment complex but you are now overwhelmed to decide which one to choose in your area. Many cities have several senior apartment complexes available but they may not be created equal. How do you know which one is right for you?

It's a good idea to schedule an appointment to see any senior apartment you are considering to see if it lives up to your standards. There are a few things to look for when you do your visit. Here are some things you should look for in a senior apartment complex to ensure you get the one that's right for you.

Safety Features

One of the first things you should look for in senior apartment complexes outside of the amenities and size of the units they have is, what safety features they have to keep residents safe. Safety within the building itself and within each unit is important as seniors age so they can feel comfortable knowing that there is help if needed.

Does the complex have resident monitoring available? Is there staff there at all times so if a resident needs help they can contact them to come quickly? Do the staff visit more vulnerable residents regularly to ensure they are ok and don't need anything?

Also, does the complex and unit itself have safety features like grab bars in the bathroom, easy-to-access showers, low-sitting toilets, and other features to keep residents safe? You should make sure the senior apartment complexes you are visiting have at least a few of these safety features.

They Are Accessible

Senior apartment complexes should be accessible to their residents. This means it should have wide hallways and doorways to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers. The kitchens and bathrooms should have lower cabinets or lower-level handles that are easy to reach for those in wheelchairs or who have mobility issues with their arms and hands.

The access to the building itself shouldn't have any stairs, or if it does, there should be a ramp or easy access to the entrance of the building.

The Location

Senior apartment complexes should be located in an area close to the type of shopping you want to do. For example, if you like to do your own grocery shopping, then look for an apartment that has the grocery store you prefer nearby. It should not be too far to get to any of your favorite shops or dining.

It should also be located close to your family and friends so you or they can visit regularly. Another consideration to consider is how close it is to nearby hospitals and your doctor's office. These should all be a consideration when searching for the right senior apartment complex for you. For more information on senior apartment complexes, contact a company near you.
